Cova Approach

The COVA approach caught my attention and I am interested on the knowledge I can absorb. I wan to take it all in.

  • Choice - Is pretty easy for me to incorporate into my classes because I believe that everyone should make their own choices when it comes to their learning. We as Teachers should monitor the students choices to see if its working for them or not. Teaching in secondary mathematics, I find the curriculum is set by the state, and we're required to give common assessments. Further students standardized test scores (SAT and ACT) are both highly monitored. Trying to find ways to allow students choice in the assignments or assessments, let alone the content we cover, has been extremely challenging. I've started by taking small steps - like choice boards for selected assignments/assessments or an open-ended project where students could simply showcase their learning using any method they chose (I still had a rubric for requirements).

  • Ownership - can be a little tricky in my opinion. I would love to see my students engaged with the material so that they really own it - they own their knowledge. They're not simply replicating my knowledge or a procedure I've taught to them.

  • Voice - One way I look to incorporate student voice is asking for feedback on lessons, assignments, etc. I want to hear what they think and use it to drive changes to classroom environments.

  • Authentic Learning Opportunities - Another tricky one in the math field, as the required content doesn't leave much time to explore more authentic experiences where the material is applied or developed naturally. I try to incorporate what I call "discovery" lessons - where students are led by guiding inquiry lessons to discern required content. Again, it's a baby step to developing more authentic opportunities within the confines of the required curriculum/assessments. I saw one of my classmates mention this and it is so very true.
